Dr. Hochman

Marcelo Hochman, MD FACS is the Founder and Medical Director of The Hemangioma Treatment Foundation.  Additionally, he is Founder and Director of the Hemangioma & Vascular Anomalies Treatment Center  (www.HemangiomaTreatment.com),  a Center of Excellence for the treatment of hemangiomas and other vascular birthmarks and The Facial Surgery Center (www.FacialSurgeryCenter.com) , both private practices headquartered in Charleston, SC.

Dr. Hochman has extensive experience in the management of vascular birthmarks and is double board certified in Head/Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has continuously been listed in “The Best Doctors in America” and  in “America’s Top Surgeons” in facial plastic surgery for two decades.

Dr. Hochman received  the coveted  “Order of The Palmetto” from South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford which is the highest honor that can be bestowed on an individual by the state for outstanding service. He is the editor/author of many publications including the Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America’s “Vascular Birthmarks of the Head and Neck” and Journal of the American Medical Association’s Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, “Evolving Trends in the Treatment of Vascular Birthmarks”.

The doctor has been featured twice on “The Discovery Channel” on its show, “Surgery: Before and After”. He is a frequent contributor to the medical literature, and has been quoted/interviewed in Parents magazine, ePregnancy magazine, and Cosmetic Surgery Times as well as local, regional and national media outlets as a recognized expert on vascular birthmarks.

He has been awarded the prestigious annual American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) Community Service Award at the convention in Chicago. The Award is presented each year to the doctor who has distinguished him/herself by “making possible free medical service to the poor in his community.” Dr. Hochman has established himself as one of the world’s leading doctors dealing with hemangioma. Patients from all over the United States and from many different countries around the world come to his clinic in Charleston, which is increasingly recognized as the destination point for parents seeking reassurances and solutions to the problems of vascular birthmarks with their children, both physical and emotional.

The Hemangioma Treatment Foundation and Dr. Hochman was selected by Charleston Business Journal and the community as its 2016 HEALTHCARE HERO in the Physicians Category. The award honors people and organizations that have a passion for healthcare and  a compassion for patients. They go beyond the call of duty for their communities and professions.

Under Dr Hochman’s direction, the Foundation’s team of doctors and his private practices Hemangioma & Vascular Anomalies Treatment Center and The Facial Surgery Center  have treated over 1,000 patients from the United States, Costa Rica, Peru, Russia, Mexico, Cypress, Turkey, and Hong Kong.  Many of these children could either not afford the treatments or did not have access to care in their communities. The referrals are self-made by parents seeking help for their children or through the medical community. He assisting in launching the Vascular Birthmarks Program Phillipines in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Makati West where he and a team of doctors and staff were able to help dozens of children during two visits. The Foundation was responsible for bringing a Filipinos doctor to train with Dr. Hochman in South Carolina, then to return home to treat these children.

Dr. Hochman and The Foundation have hosted eight highly successful and well attended Free Annual Hemangioma & Vascular Anomalies Educational Symposiums with guest experts from around the country to speak to primary care physicians: family practice, pediatricians and dermatologists to share the latest treatments and options for treating these children and adults, as well as working toward a cure.

Recently Dr. Hochman joined the staff of MUSC (Medical University of SC) Children’s Hospital in a part-time capacity to better serve more of those in need of his expertise and knowledge.

In the few short years since its creation, The Hemangioma Treatment Foundation has enjoyed tremendous success and is increasingly being recognized at the local, national and international level for its work with children.  There is no other organization in the world dedicated exclusively to providing charitable treatment to children with vascular birthmarks and other anomalies.
